Owning a
horse is a big responsibility. Proper care requires a good knowledge
of 'stable management', which includes feeding, stabling, grazing, health
care, grooming and correct use of tack.
Unfortunately some owners don't have sufficient knowledge of stable
management and this can cause unnecessary suffering.
There are a range of organisations that work to educate horse owners
to improve the welfare of horses and ponies. For more information about
UK organisations click here.
The Animal
Welfare Act 2006 provides greater protection for horses in England
and Wales. The Act requires horse owners to take reasonable steps to
ensure that their horse's needs are met. This means that a person has
to look after the horse's welfare as well as ensure that it does not
suffer. The Act says that an animal's welfare needs include:
- a
suitable environment (how it is housed);
- a
suitable diet (what it eats and drinks);
- the
ability to exhibit normal behaviour patterns;
- any
need it has to be housed with, or apart from, other animals; and
- protection
from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
