UK Equine Welfare Organisations


This section provides an introduction to the UK's equine welfare organisations. All work to improve the quality of life of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Most of these organisations rely on donations from the public for their work, so please consider supporting them if you can.

A

Animal Health Trust
The AHT is an independent charity that works to improve animal health and welfare. The Trust conducts research aimed at developing better means of diagnosing and treating diseases of dogs, cats and horses. The organisation is based near Newmarket and employs over 200 scientists, vets and support workers. Every year over 4,000 cases are referred to them from all over the UK.

Blue Cross
The charity provides practical support, information and advice for pet and horse owners. The Blue Cross also cares for up to 85 horses at its' three equine welfare centres in Oxfordshire, East Sussex and Staffordshire.

Bransby Home of Rest for Horses
The charity was founded in 1968 and provides safe, permanent refuge to horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. The majority of equines in their care have been rescued, but they also provide a home for retired horses. Bransby has over 450 acres of land and provides homes for over 270 equines.

British Horse Society (BHS)
The Society is actively involved in all aspects of equine welfare and aims to prevent neglect through education. BHS Welfare produces many free publications and leaflets covering a wide variety of topics. The Society has a nationwide network of experienced volunteers who give advice to owners and enable the BHS to respond to reports of equine suffering and neglect. Its' Welfare Department offers a free advisory helpline and email service during office hours.

Brooke Hospital for Animals
The Brooke's aim is to improve the lives of horses, donkeys and mules working in the poorest parts of the world. The charity currently operates across nine countries in Asia, Africa, Central America and the Middle East. Using its' own mobile vet teams and community animal health workers, as well as their partner organisations worldwide, the Brooke provides free treatment to animals as well as training for owners, farriers, saddlers, local healers, feed sellers, harness and cart makers.

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is situated in Northern Ireland and is concerned with the rescue and rehabilitation of horses and ponies that have been abused and neglected.

D

Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society
The Society was formed to help ponies, sheep and cattle in distress on Dartmoor or in the markets where they are sold. They campaign to promote the welfare of livestock on Dartmoor and will also provide help for sick or injured animals on the moor.

Devon Horse & Pony Sanctuary
The sanctuary was founded in 1976 and provides secure and loving homes for up to 50 animals at any one time. Their residents range from shire horses to miniature shetlands, donkeys, ex racehorses, moorland ponies and retired police horses.

Donkey Sanctuary
The Sanctuary works to prevent the suffering of donkeys worldwide. It does this by providing high quality, professional advice, training and support on donkey welfare. In the UK and Ireland it provides permanent sanctuary to any donkey in need of refuge. The charity cares for over 2,000 rescued and unwanted donkeys at various farms throughout the UK and Ireland. Over 400 of these are housed at its' base in Sidmouth.

Equine Grass Sickness Fund
The charity raises funds for research into grass sickness and improving the treatment of chronic cases.

Essex Horse & Pony Protection Society
The Society works to prevent equine cruelty in the county. It rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes horses and ponies.

Greatwood Caring for Retired Racehorses
The charity rescues sick, injured and neglected ex-racehorses. As well as caring for these animals, they re-train them with the aim of enabling them to enjoy an active life in a new home.

Horses & Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA)
HAPPA was founded in 1937 to help fight against the transportation of horses to the continent for slaughter. The organisation's welfare officers investigate reports of cruelty and neglect, offering advice and support where possible. HAPPA has two rescue centres in Lancashire and Gwent.

Horse Rescue Fund
The charity is based in Suffolk and rescues horses, ponies and donkeys from ill treatment, slaughter and neglect. Horses are loaned to approved homes once fit and healthy.

HorseWorld
The charity was established in 1952 to care for the large number of working horses whose jobs were replaced by motorized vehicles. Today it rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes horses, ponies and donkeys who have been abandoned, ill-treated or neglected. Nearly 200 equines are supported by the welfare team in Bristol and a further 275 horses are in loan homes around the country.

International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH)
This international charity works for the benefit of horses around the world. In the UK it runs four recovery and rehabilitation centres and runs a country-wide approved loan scheme. A team of 16 field officers investigate welfare concerns. In the developing world the charity works with communities to improve the welfare of horses.

Isle of Man Home of Rest for Old Horses
The organisation provides a retirement home for horses and donkeys on the island. Established in 1950, it currently looks after 50 horses and 8 donkeys and takes a particular interest in old tram horses.

Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA)
The charity has two equine rescue centres and re-homes horses and ponies via its' fostering scheme. It has a team of inspectors who investigate reports of distress or cruelty.

Lluest Horse & Pony Trust
The charity runs a small rescue/rehabilitation centre in Carmathenshire, Wales and has around 70 equines in approved loan homes. As well as its' rescue work, the Trust campaigns to raise awareness of cruelty and educate people on the proper care of horses and ponies.

Mill House Animal Sanctuary
The Sanctuary provides care for 280 horses and ponies in locations around Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Its' aim is to provide care, protection and rehoming for all animals in distress by virtue of neglect, abuse, sickness and old age.

Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre
Moorcroft was established to find suitable new homes for racehorses no longer suited to the job of racing. Its' base at the Huntingrove Stud in West Sussex provides a temporary home for up to 28 horses.

Mountains Animal Sanctuary

The charity's purpose is to provide a haven for horses, ponies and donkeys. Founded in 1982, the Sanctuary was originally set up in Kent, but moved to Milton of Ogil in Scotland in 1991 where there was more land. Over 100 equines live at the Sanctuary, most of whom cannot be re-homed.

National Equine Defense League
The League was founded in 1090 to campaign for the welfare of pit ponies and other working horses. It now provides a temporary care for a range of animals and runs a successful adoption programme.

National Equine Welfare Council
Established in 1977 as an umbrella organisation for the UK's equine welfare charities. The Council works to raise the standards of equine welfare in the UK. NEWC produces a Code of Practice for organisations involved in the keeping of horse, ponies, donkeys, mules and asses.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary

The Sanctuary's welfare team helps hundreds of equines each year by giving advice and support to their owners and carers. It also has a number of rescue centres and runs a rehoming scheme for equines in need. One of the charity's aims is to prevent maltreatment through education and it produces a number of welfare leaflets that can be downloaded from the website.

Retraining of Racehorses
This is the official charity of British Horseracing for the welfare of former racehorses. It raises funds from the British Racing Industry to support the charitable retraining and rehoming of ex-racehorses. It provides part funding for three rehabilitation centres and undertakes promotional initiatives to highlight the adaptability of racehorses to alternative occupations.

Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA)
The Society aims to prevent cruelty, promote kindness to and alleviate suffering of all animals. The charity has specialist equine centres in Shropshire and Co. Durham and runs a rehoming scheme.

Society for the Welfare of Horses & Ponies
The Society has been run as a horse hospital for more than 30 years. There are usually 30 to 40 horses and ponies in care at any one time and these are found homes via the charity's loan scheme once they have made a full recovery.

Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA)
The Society has 19 veterinary centres and 21 mobile clinics in North and West Africa and the Middle East. As well as treating sick equines, the charity shows people how to care for them. It also has an emergency programme that helps equines affected by natural disasters by treating injuries and training locals to care for them.

Spear Equine (Sue Pike Equine and Animal Rescue)
The charity provides support and care for elderly, infirm or unwanted large animals and to educate and promote an understanding of their needs. It has a centre in Warwickshire and has a network of foster homes in and around the Midlands.

Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA)
The Society provides advice and guidance to animal carers, rescues animals in distress and works to shape animal welfare in Scotland.

The Horse Trust
The Trust's retirement centre caters for the needs of over 100 horses, ponies and donkeys. It is also committed to promoting equine health and welfare and does this through funding ethical scientific research.

Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre
The centre was established in 1991 and is dedicated to re-homing ex-racehorses to loan homes for the rest of their lives.

Veteran Horse Welfare
The charity was launched in 2004 to provide advice and support to owners of older horses and ponies, as well as provide rehabilitation and care for rescued veterans at its'' centre in Pembrokeshire. Welfare advice is available from the website.
